Belief Matters

The winter ACADEMY course, titled Belief Matters, will be taught by Chuck Yrigoyen. It begins with the assumption that we are what we believe. The course explores the contention that belief matters and examines matters of belief. It will emphasize the official body of beliefs held by The United Methodist Church. A useful, but not required, textbook, Belief Matters: United Methodism’s Doctrinal Standards, is available for $11.50, and can be purchased from Church Yrigoyen in advance or at the first class session.

The course meets at the church on Monday evenings at 7:30 p.m. (January 4, 11, 25 and February 1 & 8). The same course is offered on Wednesday mornings at 9:30 a.m. (January 6, 13, 20, 27 and February 3).

No advance reservation is needed and all are welcome, from within First Church and beyond, and there will be ample time for questions and discussion.

Paul and Jesus

It seems plain to most of us that Paul’s connection to Jesus is as his interpreter. He took the story of Jesus and, in the letters he wrote, he told us what it meant for us. But scholars say it isn’t quite that simple. One illustration is the fact that the gospels base belief in Jesus as Savior on his resurrection, not his crucifixion; but Paul makes the Cross a centerpiece of his thinking about Jesus. It’s well, therefore, that we look at what Paul wrote and set it in the context of what Jesus said and did. This is the subject of the next ACADEMY at FIRST CHURCH, which will be led by Bill cherry. It begins the week of October 5, and will follow the familiar 5-week pattern of identical sessions on Monday evenings at 7:30 and Wednesday mornings at 9:30. Participants are urged to bring their Bibles.
