Taizé (Tuh Zey) is an ecumenical community in the Burgundy region of France. It was founded in 1941 by Brother Roger Shultz as a refuge for orphans escaping the war. Brother Roger was a member of the Swiss Reformed Church. The community continues today as an orphanage committed to following Christ. It is a community of reconciliation for Protestants and Catholics. Taizé worship is about prayer. The music of Taizé is often quiet and reflective, sometimes joyful and full of praise, always centering and worshipful. The songs are often drawn from scripture and are repeated for a few minutes. The repetition leads to a settled and prayerful quietness and becomes a way of listening to God. Each piece of music is written for several instruments. At First Church music is lead by Juliet Dodge on our Steinway piano. She is accompanied by an ensemble of First Church and guest musicians that may include flute, trumpet, clarinet, guitar, harp, or oboe. |
