OUR STORY

How it all started...

First United Methodist Church has a long history of supporting missions abroad and at home. We have the distinction of sending the first Methodist Episcopal missionary to Korea, Rev. Henry G. Appenzeller, a member of First Church, in 1885. He is still revered there for his remarkable ministry. Groups of Korean Christians often visit First Church to experience the area where Henry left with his bride, Ella, to witness and work in a far-off land.  It is as if our guests are standing on hallowed ground!
First United Methodist Church is an officially recognized Historic Site of the denomination (Site #435), with a legacy that began in 1807. Following a devastating fire in 1946 that destroyed the sanctuary, the congregation committed itself to rebuilding. Today, more than two centuries later, and through numerous renovations and additions, our church continues to offer diverse worship opportunities and serves as a vibrant hub for outreach and ministry throughout the community.

Expanding the vision...

First United Methodist Church seeks to connect people to Jesus Christ and the church; grow Christian disciples; and relieve suffering.
